glazing is done, for now . . .

glazing is all done.  yay!  i have stuff coming out of the kiln bisqued on wednesday.  glazing won't be done until there's a full load.  there's only 1/3 of a load for the reduction kiln, so it'll take a while for that.  but, folks still need to get their bisquing done..  hey, a few discoveries.  having a substantial foot that allows me to grip a piece while suspending it upside down over a bucket of glaze, dunking it then pulling it back out.  also, i've discovered a cooling rack is perfect for setting a piece on to pour glaze over thus freeing up my hands.  i'll be excited to see glaze results as i've tried a few new things and gotten bold with the glazing.  even dunked each piece in either snow goose or wheat  okay, let's begin.

getting prepared for some hard nosed throwing first stoneware then porcelain and yes, the porcelain is covered in mold because it does that so easily.  i shape the tubes of clay seen in the background behind the ball of clay into balls of clay then wrap them in brown paper towels because newspaper breaks down and is a pain to remove when i'm ready for the clay.  the paper helps keep the balls of clay from becoming slimey from the condensation that forms inside the plastic in which the whole kit and kaboodle is wrapped.







i can breathe for a while.  yay!

there's a lot of glazing goin' on around heah . . .

well, i embarked on more glazing today.  i didn't take pics of one bowl.  i know it's hard to get a feel for what the finished product will be, but i think it looks interesting anyway to see the pre-fire glaze.  i'm still glazing 2 items the same pretty much.  but, today i glazed w/the reduction results in mind and will be surprised to see what the oxidation results are.

well that's all she wrote.  only have a few bowls, the flower pot, the first prototype for the square bottom trials.  i will be getting more bisque out of the kiln tmw.  i'll have more mugs in there.

glazed all the mugs today . . . .

i worked on glazing today and also handled the cookie jar and the baking dish.  had to throw another base for the top to the baking dish as it was way too thin.  all the mugs are now glazed.  tmw the next battery of glazing will be the tea bowls and some of the bowls.

i've glazed them two by two except for the one w/the clear over glaze (mostly white). i plan to fire one in oxidation and the other in oxidation to get a gander at the differences. i didn't photo all of them apparently. but, you get the idea. the fun part is seeing how different the pre-fired glaze looks and the after-fire glaze. the mugs:

and finally the baking dish.  the top is upside down as i just threw the foot/knob and i don't want to put too much pressure on it.  the upside down one fits inside of the other handled bowl.  you can bake in it covered and then remove the lid and serve something else in the lid.

rollin', rollin', rollin' . . . . .

. . . . i'm on a roll.  didn't get much farther along today, seemingly, but i guess i did.  some of the below is from yesterday and some from today.  i underglazed a mug today and will trim four other items and go back to glazing.  oh, got a wonderful purple plastic apron and it's marvelous.  i wear it inside out so the clay doesn't get in the pockets, but all i have to do is wipe it clean.  and ebay find.  it's a cosmeticians apron.

this is the latest cookie jar.  i just need to trim it and put a knob and handles on it.  the bowl will actually be trimmed to be the lid.







trimmed this jar today and it's ready to go.  i may go back and underglaze the greenware on this.



this is the baking dish.  it's a larger version of the covered bowl i did previously.  the flatter bowl will be the cover.  needs trimmed and handles.  i'm trying to think of a way to put handles on the lid so it can double as a bowl or baking dish also.

Who was it said a potter's work is never done?

i trimmed today.  had some nice results.  unbagged the cookie jar also and set it out to wait for bisque fire.  too many people today.  didn't get to do all i wanted.  of course the broad with the motorized mouth had to plop right next to me though there were other spaces when she came in.  of course the other motormouths had to be there today as well.  egads!  but, i'm pleased, very pleased with the trim/handling results.

this is a cup i trimmed completely round on the bottom the other day then glued on a coil of clay and threw the foot.  i think it came out well.  i decided against a handle.



two mugs i finished today.  i put them up to dry over night and didn't bag them.  i hope they'll do okay.  i think they will.




i'm looking forward to glazing.  did i say that?  :D

had a busy week, so to recap . . .

my hands can't seem to stay warm in the studio these days.  my hands and nose (a built-in draught sensor) are usually cold while the rest of me is just fine.  i supose it has something to do with water's innate ability to disipate heat.  since the place is large and airy the heater doesn't do it well, i guess.  i am using warm water but by the time it gets cold i'm knee deep in something and do want to get up.  i've come up with a few odd looking things but they were fun to make.

i threw these cups monday.  didn't get pictures took so today i'll post these and then the resulting cups.
